Sunshine! and a fun day trip to Key West

Where are we today ?
Woke up this morning and still dark as usual, but eventually the sunrise happened, it actually happened and we saw it!!! Sunshine blues skies and a wonderful view from our coach of the Gulf  the weather forecaster finally got it right, and looks good for the rest of our stay here.
Now with such a beautiful day we gonna take a day trip to Key West, only 70 miles away so just gotta go. Today seems as good as any, tomorrow Thanksgiving, and then Black friday and a long weekend, hopefully we can beat some of the masses. Today we go for a drive go for drive to explore.
70 miles today (each way)
Now lets get going, hop in the car 8:30 and south on US 1 to mile marker 0, 70 miles. And as we knew everything in Key West is expensive but have researched what we would like to do today. After all is been 19 years since we were here and just for s few minutes off the cruise ship, so we wanna see lotsa stuff.
this is the 7 mile bridge
Welcome to Key West
yep even fuel is much more expensive
We choose to park right downtown in a parking garage, $4.00 an hour but we were where we wanted to be and could pick up the sightseeing tour that we wanted. Cityview Trolley tours, Only $21.00 compared to $28. for others and we could hop on and off at 8 different stops, pick up another 15 minutes later if we wished. Very well narrated is was too.
this one looked cool but more money
this was our trolley
this is where we toured today
our first driver and excellent narrator, well they all were
So much to see and listen to it was very entertaining, comfortable and complete. Took lotsa pics here is a few I would like to share with you.
A Hangout for Earnest Hemingway
Sloppy Joe's looked like a great place but not the menu we were looking for lunch, it does have an interesting history, one of Earnest Hemingway's famous hangouts here in Key West, you can read about it by clicking here.
Police

Our first hop off point was the Southernmost point in the Continental USA, take the obligatory picture and as luck would have it somebody offered to take one of the two of us together.
So many neat sites and signs to see, here is a couple right below than I particularly like, now the second one I;m not sure about, but could be and interesting restaurant
nope didn't stop here either
Bible class? the building looks pretty scary
Bougainvillea everywhere
cute shotgun houses
Key West Cemetery
This was where we wanted to have lunch the Half Shell Raw bar right on the water, with a great view, reasonable and seafood.(no we don't do raw). But had great service and excellent food. Started with Conch fritters, and I had fried MahiMahi (Dolphin) and Suzie had grilled Grouper so good , no supper tonight thats for sure.
the view from our table
conch fritters
my lunch
Suzie's lunch
pigeons are the cleanup crew
outside our window HUGE fish swimming around

everything here from tall ships
to shops like this
Christmas tree

Key Lime Pie
Everything in the store $5.00 good deals
Roosters everywhere on the streets too !
only one cruise ship in port today
look at the lumber this guys has in his car!! driving down the road
Now back home about 4 o'clock, time to read for a bit then down to thw water's edge and watch another sunset. Waterfront sites are flooded with only one foot waves over the tiny seawall.

Another nice sunset
Not thats it for an awesome Key West adventure. We are this close and just had to go, touristy, and interesting, not too crowded and another place that we have been and actually drove ourselves all the way there.
Glad you could come along, it was fun for us hope it was for you too.

  3. Looks like one of those "just gotta do it" type of places.
On the map it looks a little scary. Sure wouldn't want to be there in a tropical storm.
    Lots to see.

  4. Thanks for the tour. We'll be there Sunday. We've never taken the trolley tours, but maybe this time we'll splurge. Last year we took the bus down to KW for the happy hour sunset. It only cost $1.50 (I think) and that way we could have a few drinks and not worry about driving home.

We'll be staying at Sunshine Key...maybe we'll meet up if you are still there when we arrive.
