Heading to higher elevation, further west and some crosswinds that slowed us down.

Where are we today
clic on a pic to enlarge it
We had our own quiet corner last night at the Walmart in Sydney Nebraska and I had wonderful sleep. Except I slept too fast. My body is still on Eastern Standard time so instead of waking up about 4:30 am as usual it was 2:30 am. Hmm. That's it, I am awake tried reading for an hour, eyes got tired but did not go back to sleep. Oh well no problem I can checkout our route today, have coffees and wait for Suzie and the sun to rise.An what a beautiful sunrise we had.

We pulled out of the Walmart at 7:30am hoping to make good time today. But alas it was not to be. Stopped at the visitor Centre in Wyoming and was told we have some major climbing to do? As high as 12,000 feet. (he lied !) So to be cautious we stopped at the Flying J in Cheyenne, added a bit more fuel to the coach and disconnected the car. We had a bit of an issue yesterday with the coach wanting to overheat with slight grades, (and that was without running our AC) mind you it was 82f yesterday. Ended up highest elevation today was only 8,800 feet.
Suzie followed me in the car for the next 3 hours, stopping at the rest areas and made a bite for lunch. No problems with overheating at all and with the temps only about 65f. But the grades and the high wind gusts mostly only travelling 40 to 50 mph. It was a long steady climb but nothing really bad. Thanks to Al and Kelly of the Bayfield Bunch for suggesting this route, we will follow more of their recommendations. The wind was 27 mph with gusts to 40mph hitting us broadside.
good roads all the way
For the first few hours Suzie and I had a ball just bopping away to the lively tunes of the 60's and 70's on our satellite radio.
we having too much fun
The rest area at the highest elevation we saw this wonderful bust /head of Abraham Lincoln, a very nice visitor centre and great views, said this was the highest elevation on I-80 8,800 ft.
looking back the way we came
now we heading downhill for many miles 5% grade
 gear down save the brakes
Finally reached Rawlins Flying J about 2 pm. Stepped outside and nearly got blown away, no wonder my arms were getting tired.  We had planned on going further. Yup we can stop for the night right here, plan B. Fuelled the coach and our fresh water tank. We will take advantage of this warm windy afternoon. Lotsa water so we each had long hot showers. And dump our sewage here in the morning before moving on down the road. It is so nice that we can use our coach without opening the slide and is still fully accessible.  Was too windy to open it and some overnight places may not be enough room. We have yet to open the slide since last Sunday.
The parking spots here for Rv's are back in. Nice that we did not have the car hooked up, will do that in the morning.
we have seen these fences all day,
they are permanent snow fences
glad we made it through with good weather
After a nice relaxing afternoon, some reading done then gonna whip up supper. Something we have not had for a long time, Hamburger Helper, instead of hamburg we use ground Turkey that I had previously cooked up and frozen, just added some onion, garlic, broccoli, fresh mushrooms and frozen veggies, just cause I could. A nice quick easy one pan meal enough for 2 nights.
This was so tasty and added a tomato slice and cantaloupe to round out the meal. And of course leftovers for another meal.
a very tasty treat
We made more progress today and getting closer to where we want to be. But no reservations so not a big deal, just want to stay ahead of any bad weather and so far pretty good, except for the wind today.
Think we can relax a bit more after trying to walk around outside. Enjoy a nice quiet evening and on the road in the morning with  hopefully much less wind if the weather Gods hold true with their predictions.
today 253 miles
Glad that y'all stopped by and hope you had nice weather wherever you are.

Where have we been this Winter

    1. I use recipes to give me ideas, then I do what I like with most any meal, keeps the tasty buds excited.

  2. Does not sound like a fun travel day. If we knew gusts were up to 40mph, we would be off the road. I sure understand unhooking with those climbs. We use the western mountain book to avoid such climbs. Sometimes traveling slow is necessary. Be safe.

    1. This is a much easier climb than going through Denver west, did not notice the wind that much until we stopped probably because we were travelling slower.

  3. Hi George, we fought wind down below Moab today. It was often right in our faces and we spent most of the time in either second or third gear. I kept telling it we had gears four and five we could use!

    1. We did not actually do too bad just took our time and did not push our coach like we have done in the past.
Then we just stopped and relaxed which was very nice.

  5. You should be worry free now in regards to the engine overheating. From Rawlins all the way down to I-70 in Colorado the elevation drops. Keep in mind there is a Walmart about half way or so and I think it's in Craig Colorado. Small town but I think there is a bypass around the right side so grab that. When you come to a stop sign look off to your left and you should see the Walmart. Now keep in mind I'm going by memory about this to could be wrong. Walmart is on the southwest corner of Craig.....Okay I just Google Earthed it and yes it's Craig that has the Walmart. Grab the 183/7 bi-pass which is just an ordinary road and easy to miss. If you do miss it just follow through into Craig and turn right on the main street. Walmart will be on your left at the edge of town. Happy travels.....A:))

    1. Thanks so much Al for your tips, we are enjoying this route, new areas that we have never been to, kind of a scouting mission. Will keep an eye open for that Walmart if we need one. Enjoy the wide open spaces here, looking forward to warmer weather again. Glad you are feeling better.

  6. We hate driving in wind too. A head wind isn't good for mileage but it is easier to drive in than a crosswind! Glad you decided to call it a day at that point. It's good that you are managing to stay ahead of the bad weather.

    1. Was hoping to go a bit further but this worked out perfect. The cross winds are not much fun at all.

  8. Never heard of a Flying J that had back-in sites. Looks like a nice one. Hoping you have no more wind for your travels today.

  10. We've traveled that route and liked it... I think we stopped for the night at the Cabela's in Sydney... I know we stayed at the Cabela's in Kearney... right next to a major railroad yard... trains in and out all night long!

    1. The Walmart worked for us nobody else there on our side truckers on the other side, pretty quiet and we got a bit of shopping done. If we don't like the Walmart we look for something else. Thought about Cabelas across the road , but nothing we needed there right now.
