Nice day trip to Michigan and spent some money to save lotsa money.

Where are we today ?
clic on a pic to enlarge it
What a wonderful way to start the day, shortly after 7 am I did a quick wash of our coach(including the roof) and car before it warmed up too much. About 45 minutes and I am done, does not take me long. Then by 9 am we are ready to hit the road for a nice day trip.
Heading to Marine City Michigan for 3 reasons. One for a nice day trip, two to pick up some Gluten Free Honey Nut Cheerios for daughter number 2, and three to stop at the duty free store on the way back to stock up on some cheap booze.
100kms (6o miles each way)
lots of oil refineries in this area,
reminds me of Texas
here we are at the Ferry dock
Just missed it had to wait 18 minutes
Not a problem a wonderful day get out stretch a while and enjoy the scenery.
a nice area here on the St Clair River
We are first in line
a nice Church across the river
Saw this interesting plant here not sure what it is, any ideas?
This great lakes freighter heading down the river, name on the bow is Buffalo?
it is pretty large
Our Ferry is returning
We first on so first off
also first to go through customs,
easy peasy
We drove around the small town of Marine city for a bit, stopped in the grocery store and picked up 5 boxes of Gluten Free honeynut cheerios , then back to the ferry. This is a nice small American town, very quaint.
nice main street
this is UNI-Can the duty free shop.
Limited choice of cheap booze
just missed the ferry coming back, first in line again
back in Canada pay our tax and duty
only in The USA, gluten free
This bottle below at the Duty Free is $12.00 Canadian, with tax and Duty total $38.00, but at the Liquor store here is $58.00, taxes Canada are very high, but we have free? health care ?
With tax an duty only $38.00
$58.00 on Ontario
Tequila, tax and duty $12.00
$25.00 on Ontario
Now home for a light lunch, and just putter around for a while, enjoying our e-readers and watching this Robin looking for worms under our awning for quite a while, kept coming back.
Then I put some pork ribs on our Weber Q in foil with sauerkraut, on low for a couple hours. For the recipe click here or my recipe blog top right sidebar. And for the last 30 minutes added a couple cobs of corn soaked in water for and hour or so.
Then remove the ribs from the pan, save the sauerkraut, and set the ribs on my grill mat and slather with some sticky, sweet, spicy bbq sauce for a while to nicely glaze them.
I added a salad and we had a feast,
oh so tasty
What a fun day getting out and about, spending some money, saving lotsa money and enjoyed the drive on a wonderful hot sunny day. The breeze in our faces and a boat ride to boot.
Thanks for stopping by and hope you had a wonderful day enjoying this amazing summer weather.
Now its after 9 pm and trying to post our blog , between chatting with people as they walk by,  it is a wonderful evening and I am not in huge rush to get things done. After all I don't get paid by the hour anymore. Actually the government pays me not to work, like this job, getting old does have its perks. !
Check out the interactive map below to see where we have been this summer

  2. Wow, the tax on alcohol is really expensive. I'm sad every time I see fresh corn on your grill. The window here was fast and furious. The corn was ten cents an ear, but the window was only two weeks. :-(

    1. Very expensive here for most things, our corn is about $5.00 a dozen but will get it for a while yet, some farmers plant early corn and some crops will come later si we have it for a long time.

  3. We have gluten free Cheerios out here in the Saskatchewan grocery stores. We don't eat the Honey Nut ones but I will have to check next time I do groceries to see but I am pretty sure that I have seen the gluten free ones as well.

That is still a lot of money for a bottle of booze, I guess we will stick with being alcohol free for now.

Glad that you got out for a nice day's drive and saw some different scenery. It is always fun to take the ferry.

    1. That is a lot of money, but we do like to treat ourselves while we are able, at least we are able to afford it.
I actually some some gluten free this afternoon in the local grocery store, it's about time they brought them to Canada.
It was a nice drive on a day with perfect weather.

  4. Good day out. Quaint little ferry and duty free shop. Lovely. A good deal had on the alcohol. It's expensive here too and we also have free health care. Still my 14 pounds Pimms was cheap in comparison to that whiskey.

    1. It was fun, but the high taxes sure do eat away at our budget, it is nice to be able to afford some luxuries for though.

  5. Agree with everyone else. That is a yucca plant with the remains of the flower.
Wonder why you can't get that cereal in Canada.

    1. Thanks again for confirming that.
Apparently the GF Cheerios are now making their way into Canada finally , they are becoming very popular and taste the same so why not?

  7. To my way of thinking, paying taxes on alcohol is small price to pay for our wonderful health care, I wouldn't be alive without it ----- alcohol we can do without, good health we can't.

  11. Enjoy that booze slowly, savor every drop. That's a long way to have to go to get your favorite drink, but so worth it! ;c)
