Not quite as cold last night and a real good sleep we had. 38 F at 5 am and comfy inside , Turned or propane heater in and quickly a comfortable 72F in side. Gonna be a warmer day so looking forwards to that. Too chilly for a walk that I want to do but I want to be a bit warmer.

An overcast sunrise through the trees |
|
we are nice and cozy back here |
So a nice country drive around the back roads enjoying the scenery of this countryside. Will be much nice once things start to green up. Just down the road there is 2 sugar maple bushes with blue pipelines going from tree to tree collecting sap for some fresh made local Maple Syrup. E real treat that we occasionally enjoy. Not cheap though, there is a lot of work involved. It takes about 40 gallons off sap to produce I gallon of Maple syrup. Now costing about $60.00 a gallon.
|
these pipelines are amazing a pretty big family operation |
Ian Roth has an amazing local operation and has grown to 8000 taps collecting sap and has a Facebook page
HERE if you care to look at it.

another bush here across the road |
Headed down the road and more of an overcast sunrise.
|
crossing the Nith river flowing nicely with the spring rains |
Into Plattsville cruised around our old neighborhoods and checkin out all the new homes they keep building every year more subdivisions. when I move here in 1982 population was about 750 now I am sure well over 3,000.
|
Camp Awesome waiting for us to return |
Cruised about town for a bit, stopped at the garage for a few minutes to chat and back home again along more country roads.

Love this farm house our Baby sitter for daughter number 2 lived here back in the '80s' |
A tasty light lunch then a trip to new Hamburg for a few items for tonight's supper And enjoying an almost sunny day until 11:30 am then the rain began. Temperature did get to 62F (17C) so much much nicer but then some afternoon rain showers. Hmm ok that rain will help with some spring flowers etc... I stopped at the Beer store to pick up some beer, did not seem to be any deals like last year. But talking to the friendly staff he mentioned Laker Light ( a beer we like) has a 2 case deal (24 bottles each) reg price $35.95 but can get 2 cases for 60 bucks. Sold !Beer is expensive in Canada and if we can save $12.00 by buying 2 we will take the savings.
The rain only lasted for about an hour the winds died down and the sun tried to come out, almost. I did get and nice walk down the road and back about a mile, felt good with the warmer air. The fields are not ready to plant yet, they need to dry up a bit more before they can get on the land. But gonna get cold again.

down to the end of this bush |

Turkey farms here |

soon they will work the land |
Did get some reading done inside nice and cozy in here. Then a bit later after our quiet Happy Happy hour I went in the house to whip up tonight's supper for the 4 of us. It was decided on gluten free spaghetti, with meat sauce. (Sandy has lots of ground beef in the freezer so that works), I picked up some cheese buns and made a salad to go with it. We will eat around 5:30 or so when Dennis is done chores. Added some garlic butter to the fresh buns and we had a very tasty meal together.

and some Jalepeno peppers for me |
Another fun day enjoying this much milder weather and a tasty meal with family, sure worked for us. Then home for a bit finish up this posting and catch a nice early sunset , I have to drive down the road a bit , we are in the bush, but was worth the drive.
|
a nice ending to a wonderful day |
This is Ontario and the weather changes at the drop of a hat. We enjoyed today and see what tomorrow has in store for us.

Where have we been this Summer ?
There is nothing like the maple sugar from here use it everyday.
ReplyDeleteSio true It is very good we use it sparingly.
DeleteSo, you had 38 degrees this morning. Same here in central Texas. Go figure. I do enjoy reading your days...
ReplyDeleteYeah weird weather around the country this year 37f here this morning at 6 am, Thanks for travelling along with us.
DeleteI have always been fascinated by the maple syrup process, thanks for the pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe process is very time consuming, but is is so good.
DeleteYour mention of the sugar bush brought back some nice memories. I drove for several field trips when our kids were in grade school to sugar bush operations in our area a couple like you described. The best one though was a grandfather's sugar shack, open fire, big old open pot, and buckets hanging on the trees. He boiled syrup for their family. The kids had so much fun that day collecting those buckets and the treat ice cream topped with maple syrup scooped out while we stood in that little shack.
ReplyDeleteI saw an operation like that many years ago as a kid and was fascinated by the whole thing the modern way is more efficient I am sure.
DeleteGlad you made it back to friends and family. There is nothing like good Ontario Maple Syrup. I can taste the pancakes now.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to be back again,to see family and friends again, and do enjoy this Maple syrup , though rarely have pancakes.
DeleteThat is some set up for collecting the maple syrup. I watched a YouTube video were the guy collected his in buckets and boiled it up out side. Looked really good.
ReplyDeleteOur hight today was also 64 I loved it.
Collecting in buckets is the original way to do and some people still do on small scale and boiling outside over a wood fire is where it all stated and still lots of people do it. Was nice here but going to get mush colder again.
DeleteThat blue tubing is a major step forward for maple syrup producers.
ReplyDeleteYes it sure is makes things work so much easier.
DeleteWe do love maple syrup and always have it in the house now. None of that artificial junk we used to buy years ago because it was cheap. We buy ours down the road from the Ridge from a small farm.
ReplyDeleteThe warmth was nice yesterday and peeks of sunshine made me smile. A few cold days coming but we'll get there, we are half way through April already!
We always have some local Maple syrup here as well. great on pancakes but we rarely eat them so it last a long time. The warm sunshine was wonderful and soon we will have lots more.
DeleteWow I had no idea what was involved in "Real" maple syrup. I've never liked it but buy commercial syrup for the grandkids. I can see why real costs so much. Dinner looks really yummy! You do a great job! Love the backroad pictures and that house your baby sitter used to live in is Awesome! Beautiful sunset!
ReplyDeleteYes there is a lot of work involved making REAL maple syrup. We could never afford real maple syrup when growing up and even now is a treat for us. Dinner was very tasty thanks. We do love the back roads in the area, farm country living that we both love, so peaceful. Have to drive down the road out pf the bushes to catch th sunsets but worth it.
DeleteI think the Maple syrup harvest is a month behind than in previous years. Isn't it nice to visit memory lane? Your family must be loving it that you are cooking dinner for all. Enjoy the company!
ReplyDeleteYes I think it is later this year, because of the longer cold winter. Yes they do appreciate me cooking the meals a nice change for them. And I enjoy it as well.
DeleteNice that you got a good deal on two cases of beer, just don't drink it all at once... :cP
ReplyDeleteI will take a deal when I can get it. No more than 2 a day each so ut will last a while.
DeleteLove all the maple syrup photos with the blue lines. Chilly here at 42F with rain. We have the fireplace on and a heater at my desk. Hope you have a great day.
ReplyDeleteThanks, nice to see the production just down the road. 60 F today and sunny nit bad at all.
DeleteNot big on maple syrup but I certainly like beer :D Why is beer so expensive in Canada?
ReplyDeleteIt seems there is no "safe" time for me to read your blog, even if I am not hungry I end up drooling over your meals.Today's meal looks especially delicious.
I guess Maple Syrup is a Canadian thing mostly we grew up here with it and played in the sugar bushes and enjoyed tasting it.
DeleteBeer, Alcohol and gas is so expensive mainly because we have free health care I think.
The meal was very tasty thanks.
The Maple Syrup is worth every penny. It's a ton of work.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the cold leaves as we tried to bring the warmth with us when we came. However it's still April and so within the next couple of weeks the weather will turn warm and things will pop and green up. Keep the faith. Haha.
It sure is worth every penny with all the work that goes into it. Yes hopefully the cold will leave soon and all will be good again.
DeleteDang, I haven't had any real Maple syrup over forty years. I still remember how great it tasted.
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful and just down the road from us here.
