Wild Turkeys, domestic Turkey, bean soup and fall colors, yep its fall.

Where are we today ?
New Hamburg Ontario
Kinda of an overcast day today and supposed to rain , but eventually only a bit of drizzle here and there. First thing was to whip into Plattsville, for the local gossip and arrange to have our coach serviced before we head south.
Back at the farm by 8 am and checked on the 10 bean soup mix that Dennis would like me to make from Spill the beans.ca. I had soaked the beans overnight so ready to go.
beans are ready to go
So a quick trip to New Hamburg and pick up the necessary ingredients. Saw some more great colors along the way too.
Now on my way back I passed by a whole family of wild turkeys, just grazing in the field right at the side of the road. So nice to see them just wandering there. I wonder if they realize how close it is to our Canadian Thanksgiving and how much tastier they are than their domestic cousins. We had sampled wild turkey and many other types of game when we were invited to large get together with the local hunters that I used to cook for during hunting season, many years ago.  I remember we sampled deer, moose, bear, racoon, duck, quail and a few other game meats, but the wild turkey was the best.
I am on my way back home to put on a pot of bean soup and one of their domestic cousins in the oven getting ready for my family dinner on Monday.
wild turkeys
Everything chopped up for the soup, celery, geen peppers, onions, garlic sausage, a can of stewed tomatoes and a few spices, it can simmer for 2 and 1/2 hours. Got the 18 lb turkey prepped and popped it in the oven (breast side down) for about 5 hours.
These things out of the way I headed into Waterloo for a few items and stopped by Ma's for a coffee, a chat and tweak her computer a bit. Her finished front sidewalk looks wonderful too, Danny fixed up for her a week or so ago.
Now only got about 2 hours and when I got back Omer came to meet me, all covered in mud, must have been playing in the creek with one of his wild buddies (probably a racoon).
Checked on the soup and its ready to go, Dennis got his soup for lunch and we all had a sample as well.
yummy 10 bean soup
Now another hour later the turkey was done, so pulled it out on the oven let it cool a bit and pulled it apart to refrigerate and slice up tomorrow. Now put that huge carcass in a pot of water to make a wonderful turkey broth and again refridgerate so that I can skim the fat off and make a tasty turkey noodle soup tomorrow.
smells awesome

Now for supper just grilled a few hamburgers, and I had soup and the rest finished up last nights scalloped potatoes. Thats fine with me, I like the homemade soup and there's lots of it too.
Another great fall day, getting some food ready for the weekend, just beacause I can and really enjoy cooking.
Thanks again for stopping by and if you don't look too close at the food there is not too many calories, remember to look in moderation, or eat responsibly or something like that. Save room I have more cooking to do tomorrow as well.

  1. Love the looks of that bean soup. I love to make any kind of soup with beans and the more different beans involved, the better I like it.
