Where are we today?
Stratford, Ontario

George had another good sleep last night with little to no pain. It looks like we finally got the schedule of pain medication right.

Just after breakfast, Doris Glendinning stopped by for a short visit as she was in Stratford for an appointment.  She brought in several cards and this lovely blanket. It was made by the United Church of Plattsville and is given to people in hospital. I believe the blocks are knitted and then put together to make a blanket. The Peace block also has a wooden dove attached. George was totally thrilled that the United Church gave him this, even though we never went to the church. Very thoughtful of the community of Plattsville.

The following was in the card from the United Church. This brought tears to both of us and created a special memory for us. Thanks Doris.
For lunch he had meat loaf and mashed potatoes, declined the carrots. Of course along with all his meals he gets coffee or tea, milk and juice. He ate all.
I took another picture of the blanket from the United Church when it was on his bed. Now we have 2 blankets to use. One heavy and one lighter. All will depend on if he is cold or how cold. Nice to have chooses.
About 4 pm today, he had his Guinness beer. He enjoyed it but it was too filling, just the type of beer and was unable to eat all of his supper. A lesson learned. Supper was chicken stew, bun, salad, juice and milk.
Today it seemed like it was the first time in a long time where we got to spend a quality day together. The doctors, appointments and visitors have kept us pretty busy. Not a lot of interruptions today, just nurses doing their job.

We realized today that unfortunately, that Saturday was just too much for both of us with the number of visitors we had. George was so tired Saturday night that he didn't feel like eating. That is not a good thing, as he was starting to eat again.

Also, today, for the first time in a long time, I needed a nap. George is in a 2 bed room and the second bed has been empty for the past week. I checked with the nurse and used the other bed for a nap, if you call 2 hours a nap. We closed the curtain to the room and later she said she had stepped in and stepped back out. She knew that I needed to take of myself as well.

Therefore, we request that we would like all visits are pre-arranged with me. For those who have my phone number, you can text, email or contact me via a private message on Facebook. We do not want any visits after 6 pm. We are also reserving weekends for the family as some work during the week. We want to created positive memories with laughs and conversation.

These memories will boast him and help to keep him positive. Our ultimate goal, maybe very high, is to get him stronger enough to come home and maybe get treatment. To do that he also needs his rest so he can do what he wants to do. We are also being realistic, but sometimes goals can be achieved, like the goal we had to go full time RV'ing and managed in 2006.

He likes to joke with everyone he comes in contact with. His sense of humour is amazing.

Thank you for abiding by our wishes in advance.

This morning I read the comments from yesterday's posting and we got a few chuckles.

Thank you also for all your comments, best wishes and prayers.

  1. Your request that visits be arranged is wise and you stated it diplomatically. Your goal is high, and God is able...Dear Lord, please help George gain strength, go home and get treatment, may your perfect will for all concerned be done, and thank You for every blessing you have and will give us.-Mary

  5. Kudos Suzie! Glad you have the insight to take control and set the weekends up as family time, some have to travel quite a distance. With so many friends in the area, I'm sure George will have many visitors.
Keep your hat and vest handy we're all anxious to see you wearing both!

That was a generous Gift from the Church showing how many really care.

  7. Good to hear George had a good nights sleep and pain free. And just a happy to hear you also got in a nice nap today. Your right to ask people to contact you for a visit. Everyone loves you both and wants to be near but it is taxing on the week even if he is smiling away as usual.

Will continue prayers for you both and much strength.

  8. We'd make an appointment but I'm not sure which day we would get there considering we are over 5000 kms away! Keep up the smiles, the good meals (I love meatloaf and smashed potatoes ;)) and we keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Behave yourself.

  9. One of many quotes I really like says, “You are never given a dream without also being given the power to make it true." Nothing wrong with setting a high goal and it sounds like you have and excellent plan in place to help get George and yourself more rest. Yet at the same time spend time with those who love and care about you both. Plus, you know we are all praying that George gains enough strength to go home with you. Good to read he has been able to sleep with little to no pain and is eating. Hugs and prayers.

  10. Good to hear the pain management is working out. Rest is important and hard to get when in pain.
A bit of beer is always a good way to feel better. So are carrots, so George......eat yours!! LOL!

  11. Guinness beer is like roast beef dinner, tasty and very filling. Nice to see you managing the coming and going of visitors. All of them dear friends and meaning well but it takes its toll. Too bad there's no place for the Weber Q in his room…

  12. Love the blanket and card..how special are those! You did a great job of asking people to make and appointment before coming. People mean well, but can be tiring for you and George. Nice that you were able to have a well deserved nap near your hubby :) Praying for strength and that George can go home with you! Miracles can happen and with so many praying for you both..I'm going to believe that he will be home :)

  13. I'm sure friends and family understand that you both need your rest and the top priority is taking care of George. Hospitals aren't the easiest place to get any rest. How nice of the Churches to be thinking of you.

    1. Bill speaks for both of us and I am pleased that you have reached out in a nice way to control his visits. It is very important for both of you not to be tired out at the end of the day, you need quiet time to yourselves too. Love the blanket and the fact that his pain is controlled and he's beginning to eat more. xo

  16. What a nice present! Keep on smiling you two! I shared a bit at church this past Sunday about my traveling cousins and I put a bit of a positive spin on the timing of these unfortunate events in that you are near so many family and friends and are getting a lot of support... maybe just need to spread that support out a bit :). I will be in Kitchener for a week Dec 9th so maybe I will drop by...first I will call though ;-)

  17. Great post you two. I was actually about to suggest scheduled visits. It is all about getting George stronger so that he can get back home. That quilt is lovely and made with love. A very unique and inspiring card as well. Glad you took advantage of the extra bed for a nap. Did you know that if George really likes gravy that you can request an extra serving at meals? Wishing you another great day today.

  20. G'day from Aus! My thoughts are with you both. I am sure everyone will understand George's and your need for rest, and that beautiful blue blanket will help, as well as you being able to rest with him in the room. I am pleased that George still has his sense of humour and that wonderful smile. All the best.
