today's journey |
This morning we are on the road to Willis Texas which should take us about 4 and one half hours, but its supposed to rain so we secured the house and were on the road by 8:20am. Five minutes down the road the rain began, in itself not too bad but along with it was strong cross winds. So travel was no more 50 mph even thou the speed limit was 70mph. Other than that, it was scenic countryside and nice not to be traveling the Interstate with all the traffic. We got to Port Lavaca, where for some reason (not sure where I got that idea) I thought we took a ferry across the bay. Well I was sure glad to see a bridge, with the strong winds and high waves a ferry would not have been a nice ride.

Even the drive across the bridge was not a treat, with a huge gust every so often shaking our house, but we just took out time. After here we headed north for a while and my arms got a break from the cross wind. At the town of Granado was a marquis for an old movie theatre well preserved.

A little further down the road a sign for Louise, that's my sister so we waved and said HI, as we travelled by.

HI Sis!! |
So after here we are going to try our luck going around/thru Houston. Not too much traffic for a saturday, and I do love the markings they paint on the multiple lanes so you can tell if you are in the right one.

All was going well when all of a sudden traffic is stopped, and crawling. No problem we are at home anyway, so it took us about an hour to go 4 miles where construction was going on, trying to get 4 lanes of traffic into one.

now one lane |
Once thru this mess we are heading north on I-45 and stopped for fuel at the Flying-J $3.39 a gallon (.90 cents a liter) still a better price than back home. Then a quick stop at Gander Mountain, an outdoor store. I bought my last vest here last year and wanted another one, hmm discontinued, I need to find another source again.
Now a bit further up the road, off the hiway and on to Castaways RV park, pulling in here at 2:45pm. A six and one half hour drive that would have been just over four if the weather and traffic had cooperated. But now we can hang out here and relax for twelve days with some different scenery. The only problem here is its much cooler, 60f (15c) when we arrived and down to 36f (3c) overnight, but its gonna get nicer soon. We did have a sunny site and no wind so its good.

Now set up and relaxed, I whipped up a skillet dinner, with chicken breast, vegetables and fettucini alfredo for a quick and easy tasty supper. Just in time to watch a good movie on tv.

This morning I received this picture of two Whooping Cranes in flight. These are huge birds with a seven and one half foot wing span and would have been an amazing site to see. A few years agao they were almost extinct. I would like to thank our new friends Rick and Suzy that were parked beside us in Rockport for sharing this with us. We are both on the road today, us heading east and them west hopefuly our paths will cross again.
