Where are we today ?
Louisiana Welcome Centre on I-10 westbound
clic a pic to enlarge it
A very mild night (52F) and good sleep with windows open. Got a couple of nice walkabouts this morning, then we secured the coach and headed out at 9 am, westbound on I-12 to pick up I-10 near Baton Rouge so far the roads are mostly very good except for about 10 miles near Baton Rouge) not real bad just a cement highway, Then we stopped at the rest area at MM121 on I-10 Louisiana welcome centre Just before Lafayette LA to stretch and make lunch at 11 am. Glad we stopped when we did.

mostly very good roads today |
We had seen a sign saying I-10 west is closed due to a fiery crash.. This is a busy toad and detours are in effect. So think we will just hang out here for a while and check the road reports. Better here than stuck in all that major traffic no big rush anyway. Quite a few years ago we ran into a similar road closure somewhere around here. Not many other roads through the swamps.

29 miles of this
|
This is the
Atchafalaya Basin Bridge that we travel through these swamps and is 29 miles long. Our destination today is Delta downs casino where they have free overnight parking, and only less than 2 hours away so we are in no big hurry anyway. Nice and comfy here at the welcome centre and they have free coffee too. Plus it is now raining.
|
again the lovely high way markings, bridge across the Mississippi |
|
lots of boats, barges and ships in the Mississippi |
|
a very nice friendly welcome centre |
Lots of information and displays inside all about America's Largest river swamp.
|
alligator skin |
Well we did not make it to Delta Downs Casino. Watching the traffic and another accident the traffic was stopped on I-10 right behind us. No problem we are at home wherever we are. Suzie had a nap and I walked about the visitor centre keeping an eye on the roads and checking options. Finally at 3 pm the interstate was open again, but moving very slowly so we just decided to stay here for the night. Heck it is raining and I just washed our coach yesterday. Why not, nice and secure, relatively quiet and free wifi. This is a good overnight stop very large spaces, the 5th wheels beside us can open all their slides. We don't need to.
|
not much moving westbound |
So we put our antenna up and have 3 local channels, lotsa food and quite comfortable here. A couple of other rv's are beside us from Quebec and will be spending the night as well plus they have overnight security. No trucks allowed here, they have parking on the other side of the interstate.
We can enjoy reading for a while still raining, have a nice quiet Happy Hour and whip up a tasty chicken helper meal, with Tuna (we have left over chicken but like that for lunches)
|
we had this in the pantry, quick easy and tasty |
Now enjoyed reading for a while before supper time, quite comfortable temperature 68F, we liking it and it is raining anyway.
|
another Tasty Abita Springs Beer |
|
nice large rv parking spots |
|
this was a rare tasty treat, I just added, mushrooms, celery, carrots and onions |
|
This is where we ended up 111miles today |
|
this was our planned 223 miles today |
Any how that was it for a fun day and as rv'ers know plans are made to be changed, thats why we don't have many plans carved in stone. We have only one thing definate for this Sunday but lotsa leeway for that. The chalkboard works real well.
Glad that y'all dropped in for a peek today and hope you had a good one as well.

Where have we been this Winter?
We were just saying today that we are so glad that so many people use the Interstate. Saves the good quiet roads for us!
ReplyDeleteGiven your route, we would have been on the U.S. 190... it's a nice road.
We were going to take the U.S. 190 just a few miles out of our way, but that w as mostly and alternated route for this delay, we are quite comfy here.
DeleteThat is a rather nice welcome center except for the frequent mosquito hordes I have encountered.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice welcome centre but no mosquitoes today, just rain.
DeleteSounds like you truly lucked out when you stopped at that welcome center. Way more enjoyable then sitting in a long line of slow moving traffic. Continued safe travels.
ReplyDeleteWe are not in a huge hurry anyway and have enjoyed our stay here.
DeleteGlad you and Suzie are safe and sound. Enjoy the rest. Safe travels tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteDeb
Thanks Deb we thought it much more relaxing just to hang out here.
DeleteThat was a good find at the Welcome Center, better hang out there than be stuck in traffic wasting gas.
ReplyDeleteWe like to always check the welcome centres anyway get road reports etc.., the detours were all through small towns around the accident, not fun with all the traffic.
DeleteThank you for the photo of the pecan pie. It looks as though the chef made her own crust and added some candied walnuts to the top of the pie. Since these pies are so rich in flavor, it takes only a small slice with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream to make a delicious dessert. Warming the slices just a little will make the cold ice cream taste really good. I baked 8 regular size pies tonight for our large family in North Carolina for Thanksgiving Thursday. Did not do the crust, but instead let Pet-Ritz pie shells help me out in order to cut my time down. Just nothing like pecan pies for the holidays (and, of course, Santa Claus!).
ReplyDeleteWe had a sample and was very tasty, love them, but like you said very small pieces is all you need. The remade crusts do dave a lot of time.
DeleteSometimes we luck out after other peoples misfortune. Back in 2010 was coming down the Pacific Coast Highway just before entering CA and a crash ahead closed the road. Pulled into one of those pullouts on the ocean, where no overnight parking was allowed. The police said they did not know how long the road would be closed and we were welcome to stay put the night. Very memorable spot to stay a night right on the ocean.
ReplyDeleteYes Peter we got lucky and this is a great spot to spend the night, free wifi and secure. By the sen would have been better but we take what we can find.
DeleteThat's my kind of travel day ..... 111 miles. I've never stopped at a welcome center before. That one looks especially interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt was shorted than we planned but was very relaxing. A lots of Welcome centres are Rv friendly and we have stayed at quite a few. over the years.
DeleteI love the way the welcome centers back there seem more like a museum and very friendly to visitors. Coffee is a nice plus too. I remember Florida also had orange juice as an option :) Nice place to spend the night..glad you took advantage. Haven't had the hamburger (tuna) helper in a long time, but sure looks good!
ReplyDeleteWe have found a lot of very nice welcome centres in our travels and make good use of them, Enjoyed their coffees and smiling faces too
DeleteThe helper was a nice option and very tasty, it has been a while us too. Quick easy no fuss meal.
What a great spot to stop. Good choice to stay put and keep at least one rig off the highway. I heard that the three days leading up to Thanksgiving are the heaviest traffic days of the year......as well as the Sunday following when everybody heads home.
ReplyDeleteTravel safe!
t was great spot to spend the day and night very rv friendly they were. We plan to stay off the roads around the US Thanks giving, Christmas, New Years and Presidents day, Nice to settle in and let the crazies go nuts on the roads.
DeleteSomeone up there was looking out for you and had you stop when you did. Nice little adventure.
ReplyDeleteYes it sure worked out pretty good, always nice too have new adventures.
