New Mexico to Benson Arizona, perfect travel day.

Where are we today ?

Today we on the road heading to Arizona, the place we love to spend our winters and have for many years. Early morning walkabouts here at Elephant Butte state park is wonderful, just taking our time waiting for the day to warm up, secure the coach and get on the road.
Watch the news , coffees and some computing no hurry we have about a 5 hour leisurely drive today.
We here !
The scenery here at Elephant Butte NM is wonderful and so peaceful at this time of year.
not sure what these flowers are but nice to see
Our site at Elephant Butte this morning
before hitting the road
Drove through T or C onto 1-25 and headed south. Right turn at Hatch, shortcut to I-10 west to Arizona.
Hatch New Mexico is the the Chili Capital of the World according to them and chili peppers everywhere! Don't need to buy any, Suzie don't care for hot stuff and I have enough hot stuff here to do me a while yet.
Chili Peppers everywhere, drying them on the roof
This is a wonderful drive (the shortcut)  to I-10 west
next to no traffic.
Now we know we getting into Arizona, dust storms can happen at any time. We have seen a few over the years.
We are getting close, just past Texas Canyon AZ rest area,
love these rocks, seem about ready to fall
Checked in to Valley Vista resort Benson at 2 pm. A membership park (CTC) we enjoy and love Benson. Small friendly town reasonable prices and the location where we want to be for a while. $14.00 US dollars a night, with full hookups, cable tv if you want, and free internet at the clubhouse.
all set up enjoyed the afternoon sun
temps about 80 f, love it !
wonderful hot afternoon in the shade and a great view
Then I whipped over to the rv place close by (used to be Cates and  Hill) but Betty finally retired and sold the business in January and is now renamed  Elite Sales and Service, 670s Highway 80 Benson AZ 85602 phone number 520-586-3339. John is still there and very helpful. He has ordered the part for our step that broke the other day and should be in tomorrow. They have always treated us fair and can almost always get the parts we need very quickly. Best Rv parts supplier we have ever been to.
On the way back stopped at one of our favorite eating places on the road. Junction Express, they have the best Broasted Chicken next to Anna Mae's in Millbank Ontario. Another main reason we stop here.
This the place right in front of the campground
I pre-ordered 10 pieces of broasted chicken (the best deal) fries and coleslaw just like we always do for 5:30 pm supper time. And true to their word was done right on time fresh and hot and so very good! It's worth the drive here just for this. Of course we have left overs. Not exactly on our healthy eat menu but sometimes we just have to do it.
oh yeah !
then outside our dining room window a wonderful
Arizona sunset

We are here for a week in Benson, maybe 2 not sure yet, but do love it here and lots to do if we want, seen most everything around, but maybe some things again.
Glad that you dropped in for a visit and hope you had an awesome day as well.

  1. I have stayed at an RV park in Benson a few times when I passed through that way. I used to be a member of the Gold Prospectors Ass. of America and they held one of their many "outings" in Arizona and on our way to and from, we would stop at Benson. It was a nice park.

    1. We really enjoy the Benson area, could spend more time here but still want lower elevation for warmer winter temps.

  2. Funny you arrived in AZ today just as we are leaving in the very early morning. We aren't too far apart tonight......next time :)

  3. We love broasted chicken. How do you fix leftover chicken without getting soggy crust. Is it possible to reheat some way to keep it crispy?

    1. Heat in the over on a cookie sheet 325f for 15-25 minutes.

  4. I bet it felt good to cross the Arizona border. We're also happy when we make it through the low sandy desert of New Mexico. Sand can certainly cause damage to your vehicles and that's not to mention how bad zero visability can be.

  8. Have you toured Gammon's Gulch? The stretch from Deming to the border nearly always has winds. It must have been your lucky day.

    1. We did Gammon's Gulch in 2006, loved it.
We had a bit of wind but no problem. One year we pulled off at Deming for the night because of high winds and visibility.

  9. Glad you made it safely to the warm southwest. That chicken meal looks super good - you gotta splurge on occasion. As chile pepper fans we went to the Hatch festival several years ago while visiting in White Sands and I still can picture the peppers all over the roofs.

    1. The chicken was awesome as usual.
Love this area here. Would have liked to check out the chilis but no need to this time. Amazing the chili peppers everywhere there.

  10. Sounds like you had a nice day for a drive. We are, also, slowly making our way to Arizona. Planning to be a little south of where you are now, in Huachuca City, by the 23rd. Continued safe travels. Maybe we will catch up at some point and we can meet in person.

    1. It was a wonderful day. Huachuca City is not that far from here, close to Sierra Vista. Maybe catch up there or further down the road.
      Save travels.

  11. I don't like that zero visibility sign. Makes me very nervous.

Enjoyed Benso also. They have a very nice Escapees park.

  13. We do like Benson and the area around it. But it can be quite a bit cooler there than the low desert, as you well point out.

    1. It can be cooler at times, but we take the good with the bad, still love it here, much nicer than Ontario at this time of year.
