Fri. July 9th Buckhorn

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer, since August. 2006

Well today is a bit cooler and calling for rain. A bit of a break in the heat wave. We had planned to visit an old family friend at his cottage about and hour north of here on Deer Lake. I had made some potato salad, salmon and egg salad sandwiches and watermelon slices to take for lunch, we packed the cooler and go for a nice drive. We had rain for part of the drive, but it ended up not too bad. Just before we got there I spotted a huge Moose in a marshy clearing about 50 feet away, but was unable to stop for a picture on the narrow road with cars behind us. Again we found the narrow laneway into his cottage (shared by 3 other cottagers), marked with a small sign and barely visible from the road, it is narrow, about 1/2 km long taking you thru the bush into a different world of piece and quiet, on a very clear inland lake in Haliburton Highlands.

We had a nice lunch and attempted to help him with a few issues on his new mini laptop computer, were able to sit outside on his front deck after the rain stopped enjoying the view down the lake and the hummingbirds zipping into the feeder. The rain had stopped but was still a bit overcast, and the mosquitoes decided to feast on us for a while. After a nice visit we headed back to our coach, and unpack the remainder of our picinc lunch.

Now seeing as tomorrow is our 17th Anniversary we decided to head into Buckhorn to the Olde Ice House Family Restaurant and Wee MacGregors pub and check out their homemade food in particular their specialty of pickerel. We started with one pound of mussels and garlic bread,  I had deep fried pickerel and chips in a light batter with coleslaw, and Suzie enjoyed panfried pickerel, real mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus. The restaurant is small with antique dinning tables, the food and service excellent and a reasonable price as well. Nothing fancy just good home cooking, as opposed to so many places with too much prepared food. Then back home to relax outside, chat with a few neighbours and read for a while until it was too dark to do so.
