Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer,
since August 2006
Once you retire its time to stop and smell the roses, no need to rush thru life anymore its gone too fast already, so lets just slow it down and enjoy. Today we decided to take a road trip around Baldwin county, small towns and villages, on the east coast of Mobile Bay, nice scenery, we found some beautiful rose gardens in Fairhope by the town pier, and the aroma was absolutely magical. If you get close enough to you might be able to smell them too.

Sunday's adventure |
We started at "C" on the map left thru Loxley to Daphne, then south thru Fairhope, Point Clear, east thru Magnolia Springs the south to the Gulf Shores then back north on 59 to "C" again. The drive thru Daphne and along the coast is a scenic highway and a beautiful drive it was. The small towns, amazing southern style houses, large sprawling lots and lawns, the roads in a lot of places were overgrown with oak trees and spanish moss just beautiful. We came into
Fairhope and found the Pier (Town Square) with amazing rose gardens in full blown. Strolling the gardens and fountains then out the pier that was reopened in 2006 after hurricanes Ivan and Katrina severely damaged it. There was a few people fishing and one man the was "
net casting" a very interesting efficient technique for catching fish.

Fairhope Town Square |
After this we drove thru the downtown area that was full of gift shops, antique shops and restaurants, very quaint southern town but hardly anything was open. It was 10:30am the busy places were the few huge churches with full parking lots, so we just carried on down the coast enjoying the sights and a lovely sunday drive. Thru Point Clear, to Magnolia Springs then down hwy 59 to Gulf Shores, and Gulf State park. Well it was very foggy on the beach, not a beach day.

foggy on the beach |
But by now it was after noon and we looked for a local seafood restaurant for lunch. Our choice was the one with the most cars in the parking lot and it happened to be the
"Original Oyster House" on the bayou in Gulf Shores. We are not oyster lovers but where there is oysters there is fresh seafood. A nice setting with shops on the boardwalk around the restaurant, we were seated by the window overlooking the bayou. Starting with a fresh salad bar then and lunch specials for me was grilled, crab stuffed mahi mahi (also known as dorado in Mexcio) and Suzie had baked sutchi (a fancy name for catfish), both cooked to perfection and very tasty.

we found a friend |
No with full tummies we walked about the shops outside enjoying the beautiful day, then back to the car for a leisurely drive back home, where we found a shady spot with a nice breeze to enjoy our books for a while. Then a bout 4 o'clock we had some friends drop in for happy hour (Emile and Monique) the couple we ran into at Abita Springs Louisiana and are from our home park, Galvin Bay in Ontario. Always nice meet up with friends along the road. They also introduced us to Diane and Dennis from Florida that have been rving with them.
After chatting and catching up, and everybody was happy enough, they went to the clubhouse to play cards while we continued to read until it was too dark 7:30 pm. So inside to watch a movie with popcorn and an apple for supper.

What a fun day you had! Yes do smell those roses, I think I lost several bushes when is snowed here 2 weeks ago. They had unthawed and started growing and then came the cold & snow. Now they are black.
ReplyDeleteContessa , Yes we had a great day, too bad about your roses, gotta get some more I guess?
