Sat. Apr. 9th 2011, Strawberry Festival

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer,
 since August 2006

Saturday morning and it's still 74f at 5:30am,  nice to enjoy the warm nights with the windows open, and early morning outside sounds. Everybody is out and about, walking dogs lots of kids just running and playing everywhere, its gonna be another hot one!

Over by the clubhouse the sports pavilion is open with the big screen tvs tuned into the morning news, here you can have breakfast in the early morning shade and watch the news, and sports in the afternoon.

We know its supposed to be hotter today then yesterday so we headed out before 9:00am for the Baldwin County Strawberry Festival in Loxley about 15 minutes away. This is a big event as the traffic was backed up and the police there directing traffic into the parking areas.

Glad we got here when we did, not too hot yet and not too crowded. We walked the paved walkaway about the park in the shade of the trees enjoyed the sights and sounds and checked out the various wares that were here. Loved the young Southern Belles walking about the grounds, very proud of their dresses.
so cute
Walking on we checked out the car show, with quite a few old cars in the hot sun, no shade here but its still early.  With all the smells of food cooking it made us hungry so we stopped for a bite, pulled pork and bbq'd chicken on a bun were just right for us as we sat in the shade of the tent with a bottle of water and listened to the very good music for a while.

Then we continued to walk, past more vendors, and thru the fairgrounds, with lots of games and rides for the kids until we had seen it all. It's getting much busier now the walkways very crowded and it was getting close to noon. We could not leave without some strawberry shortcake so we stopped and shared a huge one, just right.

Back to the car and in the long lineup to leave, with more cars arriving and even satellite parking lots down the road with shuttle buses. As the police officer directing traffic said to us " too much party and not enough parking", so true.

Now we were back home by 12:00 as the temperature is still climbing. Our thermometer reached 100f (34c) in the shade with humidity making it much warmer, even the temperature gauge on the BBQ was rising and it wasn't even turned on.  But we have some shade and a nice light breeze, so a few walkabouts, putter around and read in the shade. We considered going for a dip in the pool, but both pools were very busy this afternoon, (where did all the kids come from wow?).
So a refreshing shower and a book in the shade worked well. Then we enjoyed happy hour with Denis and Sandy for a while, lots to chat about since we met them over a year ago. Eventually time to fire up the barbie to finish up our spare ribs, (after 10 minutes in the pressure cooker), boiled potatoes, sauerkraut and corn.

       Another great southern Alabama day!
