Lets go for a drive to Julian in the mountains for a piece of pie! Why? Because we could.

Where are we today?
clic in a pic to enlarge it.

Now today we gonna get out and about.  That is our plan.  Let's take a day trip to Julian California the Apple Pie capital of this area. Why? for a piece of pie or two. Why not? Climb the the mountain, from 676 ft above sea level to over 4,200 ft. A mountain  drive on the twisty mountain roads into this small tourist town,
83 miles for a couple pieces of  pie
this mornings sunrise through our windshield
Headed on out about 9:30 Arizona  time  and arrived there an hour later. Winding mountain roads all the way up. But got there at 9:30 California time, most of these places don't open for another hour or so.
amazing winding roads to get there

Checked out the cider mill, nothing we needed here, been here before.
Now at Jack's we picked up 4 Apple sausage
from their meat counter
Apple dumplings at mom's Bakery looked interesting
but not today
We here for a piece of pie, and the place we have been before . The JulianPie company . Was good  before and even better this time

Her we shred a piece of Caramel dutch apple, heated with vanilla and cinnamon ice cream. And took a piece of Peach apple crumb pie home plus an apple cinnamon loaf just cause we could and we were here.
caramel apple dutch pie with ice cream
oh, it was wonderful
Now our pie fix was done for breaky then headed to Santa Isabel and a longer drive back home taking a different route. Past the Julian Pie company factory and a more scenic route.
rolling hills and pastures
Susquash?
Now heading back down the mountain back to Borrego Springs about a 15 mile downhill drive with mostly a 10% grade and some amazing views of the valley below.
Salton Sea in the distance
this 57 Chevy truck pulling an old airstream up the mountain
We home for a light lunch then I took a drive looking for the Clark dry lake bed. Up Rock House road. Think I found it? Anybody know???
a sign said Rock House Canyon
this what we brought back from Julian,
to consume at a later date
This after noon temps got 85 f outside and only 83 f inside. Now this is really the weather  we are looking for. Perfect !
shade for Suzie's legs so she does not burn
found a gecko  slipping across our sight
A couple hours enjoying our books in the shade then fire up our Weber Q to grill a tender pork tenderloin to add to our salad.
yup , very tasty
And as it was about done we were treated with a very nice desert sunset.
Now just another fun, perfect desert day , thanks for stopping by.

Where have we been this Winter?

  1. What a beautiful day for a road trip! The Apple Mountain Berry pie is my fav, we'll usually get a take'n'bake to share. But your selections look awesome too! I'll also offer Dudley's as a good place for a deli sandwich, but for you I'd recommend a loaf of unsliced bread off the top shelf - perfect for your soups. The grand-girls love the unsliced potato bread, so do I.

    1. It was a perfect day, that's for sure. We actually had the Apple Mountain Berry Pies last time we were here. Ae don't usually eat desert so did not want a whole pie., Love Potato bread, but very seldom eat bread anymore. Maybe we have to back?

  8. We drove to Julian for a piece of pie too but that was a couple of years ago. At that time the ground was also covered with snow. Thank goodness the roads were clear though.

  11. Julian is a very dangerous place for the waistline. We contributed to the local economy big time. About two days later, our waistline proved it. lol.
    Beautiful drive for sure.
