Where are we today ?

Perfect night for sleeping and we both had a good nights rest. At 5 am outside was 36F but our blue flame heater warmed us quickly to a comfortable 75F inside.
All raring to go at 7am as the sun was rising a nice walkabout the campground for my first mile of the day. Shortly after 8:30 Suzie sorted the laundry and I took it the the machines to do their magic. 2 washers and 2 dryers used only $1.25 each and love their system here using a credit card to pay for the machines. Again no quarters needed great way to do it.

Where have we been this Winter?
Never thought I would see the day where I could offer you a suggestion on cooking. The beer can thing with the chicken works if you place the chicken on top of the can, not the can in the chicken. *smile* LOL.
ReplyDeleteYes Peter I know that, but our Weber Q is not high enough to stand the the chicken up. I tried but it fell over so just left the can there anyway. It was that way to start but alas will not work, The way we usually do our chickens work great. so back to basics again that works on this grill.
DeleteWhen Beach and I took a trip to Cuba in June of 2017 (thanks to Croft, who gave us a lot of help before we left), we saw a lot of Cubans using the beer can technique in he suburbs of Havana. There were so many outside homemade grills; the chickens would sit upright on the cans of beer; the cook would turn the cans periodically to orient the chickens differently to the flames in the pit; no cover over the chickens was used, just anything on the sides they could find to deflect the wind from the flames and the chickens to keep the heat constant. The residents would turn their backyards into little restaurants and sell the beer cooked chicken and black beans and rice to anyone who wished to eat at one of their plastic tables or a to-go order. Any way to make a buck, and the chicken (sometimes I thought it was a rooster) was very good! The beer gave it a wonderful flavor.
ReplyDeleteThey were doing the same idea in Mexico when we there for 2 months cooking chickens in their yard, and you could get a meal tp go very reasonable. Our Weber does not have flames and does not get hot enough without the lid closed , that is the design of it I can cook things right on the grill and no flair ups that's what I love about it.
DeleteI've read lots of Jance books excellant writer. Meet her years ago at a book signing at Tucson Airport
ReplyDeleteWe too enjoy here writing and she keep writing new ones. It would be nice to meet her.
DeleteI agree with Suzi, Tombstone done once is good, but no reason to do it again. We've been twice - once too many. If you have not been to the Buffalo Soldiers display at Fort Huachuca it's worth a visit while you are in the area. Not as 'western romantic' as Tombstone, but authentic history.
ReplyDeleteNow the only reason we go is for the Reuben at BNK's it has changed a lot since the first time, getting more modern takes away from it. We tried the Buffalo Solders display a couple of times but were not allowed in at the gate. because we were not US citizens, We were given a few tips last year maybe give it a try again.
DeleteI have read every JA Jance book. Glad you got your chicken cooked no matter the position of the beer can.
ReplyDeleteWe have read so many and Suzie just downloaded a few more always enjoy her writing, mostly about the areas we enjoy. The chicken did get cooks and tasted wonderful as usual. No need for the beer can I will continue to do it my normal way that works very good.
DeleteThose beer can cookers look pretty cool, to bad you can't use them. Glad you were able to enjoy a nice sunny day.
ReplyDeleteThey are very cool too ba I can't make them work on our equipment. It was a wonderful the reason why we are here in the winter.
DeleteYou are in one of our favorite places. We always enjoy walking around Tombstone and a meal at Big Nose Kates.
ReplyDeleteNice sunrise and sunset pictures and the blue skies are wonderful.
We do enjoy touring around this area and a meal at BNK's a bonus. Loving the clear blue sunny skies and warm temperatures.
DeleteHeard of it, but have never tried beer chicken. I can see your gizzy is too big for the Q. Apparently using just the can worked. Since I don't drink beer, I never wanted to buy a six pack just to try it. Looks delicious though!!
ReplyDeleteYes too bad I wanted to try it, But to be honest, the chicken cooks quite well on our Weber Q without the beer, At least I tried.
DeleteSounds like another great day. I'm guessing that's going to be the way of laundromats from now on. Even our little one here in Yerington gives you a choice of coin or card. Your chicken looks awesome as always. Never made beer can chicken but we've had it a few times. Tastes the same to me honestly. Beautiful sunrise and sunset :)
ReplyDeleteYes we have run into quite a few laundromat using this card system, much easier and don't need to worry about change all the time. I agree it tastes the same and wasting a beer, Loving these Arizona skies.
DeleteYou could try putting a small pan of beer on the grill beside the chicken, the steam should do the same externally as it would internally. You may have multiple visitors if they smell the beer cooking though. Hahaha. Just a thought. Beer can chicken is excellent. You don't have to use beer, you can use pretty much any liquid. I've used ginger ale and even added a bit of honey or REAL maple syrup to the mix.
ReplyDeleteWe have had both and tastes the same to me, and have had it with ginger ale as well. The way I usually do it works perfect anyway. Even just grilling the chicken people want to join us for dinner.
DeleteI enjoy J.A. Jance books as well. you don't need beer can chicken, you have the other way perfected. :)
ReplyDeleteWe've made it when we had our big bbq at our house. Like Shirley, I never noticed a difference in flavour anyway.
Glad you enjoy the area and are getting some nice weather.
She is a very good read and Like to read here books when in this area. I did not notice a difference either. The other way works good for us.
DeleteThe weather here is wonderful and we do love the area.
