On the road west to Arizona
Tues. Dec. 1st Was a cool night at the rest area but we were toasty. Once the sun came up and we finished our coffees we hit the road heading west planning to get into New Mexico today about 3oo miles. Well about 1- 1/2 hours down the road we stopped for fuel at Fork Stockton and a truck driver asked us "which way are you going?" We told him west, and he replied "nope, highway is closed at exit 170, a foot of snow". We thanked and thought we would carry on a ways further, we were at exit 259, so we had about 90 miles before roads closed. Back on the interstate a large flashing sign told us I-10 closed at exit 170 confirming what the trucker had said. So away we went gotting foggy, snowy then started a bit of snow accumulation at the sides of the roads, a bit of black ice and no traffic. At exit 212 (Pecos)we turned of to where the last campground was and found it to be pretty scary. This used to be a truck stop, but the pumps were closed, windows dirty, the bar was boarded up, but, we could camp for $20.00 in an empty campground in the middle of nowhere with no water, no washrooms, no internet and a winter storm warning! No thanks. We got back on I-10 and back to Fort Stockton and found a nice spot (brand new) campground with full hookups and free high speed internet. Relaxed here toasty warm and cooked a nice supper of garlic sausage, potatoes and mixed veggies. The watch a bit of TV and turn in for the night, hoping to resume travel tomorrow. Tues. Pics.
